Getting the size down without visibly degrading the image
Quality 80 is a starting point, not a rule
For photographs and generated imagery, WebP around quality 80 usually removes most of the file weight before the eye notices anything. The images that break that rule are the ones carrying fine detail: small type inside a graphic, thin line art, screenshots of interfaces, and dense food texture. On those, compression artefacts show up as soft smearing around edges. If the subject contains readable text or hairline strokes, compare a higher quality export before settling.
When the converted file comes out larger
It happens more often than people expect, usually when the source is a small PNG of flat colour, or a JPEG that was already compressed hard. Re-encoding an image that has already lost detail does not recover any budget; it just adds a second pass of loss. Resizing beats compressing
The single biggest win is usually not the codec but the dimensions. Keep the original
An optimized export is a derivative, and each further round trip through a lossy encoder costs a little more detail. Treat the WebP as a delivery copy and keep the source file wherever you store assets. When you need a different size later, go back to the original rather than re-exporting the export.
Where WebP still gets refused
Browser support stopped being the issue years ago, but upload forms are a different story. Some marketplaces, print services, older CMS installs, and internal tools still accept only PNG or JPG. Check what the destination takes before converting a batch, because converting back from WebP to PNG will not restore the detail the first encode discarded.
